Maltodextrin is a starch-based ingredient widely used in baby food, protein shakes and sports drinks and as a fat replacer in low-calorie foods.

Compared to native and modified starch, maltodextrin is easier to digest- hence its widespread use in nutrition for athletes and infants.

Maltodextrin can also replace fat in yogurts and spreads. It has less calories than fat (4 calories per 1 gram vs. 9 calories per 1 gram of fat), so the total caloric value of the product is less while the texture remains the same.
